By Harley Casas Just imagine, an endless blue ocean, full of life, and mystery. Seems nice right?. Well if we don’t put an end to pollution and unnecessary waste, those oceans will be empty, and unrecognizable. Every year, millions of metric tons of waste primarily plastic gets put into our oceans. To put this more into perspective, this means one garbage truck of plastic gets dumped into the ocean every minute. 32% of all plastic waste end up in our oceans. If this rate doesn't drop, there will be more trash in the ocean than fish. This sounds scary, almost unreal. But this is real life. OUR oceans are on a straight-away route to destruction. This isn’t something we can worry about later, this needs to end NOW.
This problem really hits me because I personally love everything about the ocean. The fact that we have only explored five percent of the ocean is unbelievable. But what's even more unbelievable is that we might never get to see the rest of it, or at least a large percent of it. Ever since I was younger I always wanted to become a Marine Biologist. If I achieve my goal, hopefully I can find a way to prevent all of this from happening, and maybe even restore what has already been destroyed. Overall, I guess the real question is, why should you care? Well without our oceans, where do you think drinkable water comes from? Eventually, the ocean will be so contaminated, that filtering the water will be almost impossible. If it is possible, i'm sure it would cost a whole lot of money. Clean water will become scarce, and expensive. It will move from a necessity, to a luxury worldwide. But what about all of the freshwater locations? Only 2.5 percent of all water sources on Earth is freshwater, and that is clearly not enough to supply the world. Our world thrives off of its oceans, and we need to keep it that way.
