By Terralyn Schultz Recent studies from scientists in China suggest that Earth's Inner core may have stopped turning and may even begin to go in the reverse direction. The Earth’s inner core is the deepest layer of the planet and is surrounded by thousands of miles of different materials. The first layer is the crust followed by the mantle; these two layers occupy about 85% of the Earth’s volume. After the mantle is the outer core which is the fluid rock that surrounds the inner core, allowing it to rotate at different speeds compared to the rest of the Earth. Lastly comes the inner core, a solid ball of extremely hot iron with a radius of about 2,220 miles. This core is near to the size of Mars and contains nearly one third of Earth’s mass. In the study conducted by Yi Yang, associate research scientist at Peking University, and Xiaodong Song, Peking University chair professor it was found that the seismic records from 2010 to 2020 have had little to no change while records from 1980 to 1990 had obvious change. The scientists theorize that the records showing a lack of change in recent years may be due to the Earth’s core slowing, stopping, and possibly changing directions. Although the data analysis is valid Hrvoje Tkalcic, a geophysicist at the Australian National University, who was not involved in the study, argued that the inner core doesn’t ever come to a stop and thinks that the results could mean that the core is now more in sync with the rest of the Earth. The scientists all agree that more research is needed to shed light on the situation. What impact does this have on day to day living? Well, not much. Tkalcic stated that there is, “Nothing cataclysmic happening”. Yang and Song say that any small differences in electromagnetic and/or gravitational forces could possibly cause changes in the inner core’s rotation. There is also a theory that the Earth’s inner core has a 70 year rotation cycle so this could be normal. When asked about how she felt on this topic Siwah Welterlen, a senior at West Valley High School said she didn’t know much about how the whole system worked but thought it, “Sounded pretty interesting”. The inner and outer cores are connected in more ways than one. The magnetic field that the outer core creates causes the inner core’s rotation which is also related to the mantle’s gravitational effects. Discovering the operations of the inner core could help uncover more information about the Earth’s depths and how they function. By Payton File Apex legends is an all around fun to play game and if you want to play with friends then you can. You can play with up to 3 friends and as few as 2. In 2019 there were approximately 70 million Apex players.
The objective of the game is to complete the challenges, unlock legends, and win in the battle royale based game. There are about nine Apex characters and they all have their own unique abilities. Different characters have different experiences that make the game more fun or interesting. For example, Bangalore has a smoke grenade and injures other players a small amount on impact. That is only Bangalore's special, her ultimate is a barrage of bombs that stick into the ground and after a few seconds they explode injuring and disrupting vision on whomever is in the path or area of the bombs. There are multiple ways to have fun with this game, you can play the events that are created by Respawn entertainment, or play trios or duos with friends or the game will auto fill the squads. If you don’t want to play against others or you just want to 1v1 a friend you can always go for the training grounds. If you like the game enough and want to try and go for the legends that are locked, you can have fun and play trios or duos. Whenever you level up in the game there are legend tokens that unlock the legends of the different seasons. Every level up earns you 600 legend tokens, and you need 12,000 to unlock one legend. So an estimate level to unlock the first legend would be around 23. That is speaking as the player is getting as many kills as they can every game and is playing to win every time. And if you don't want to win them the easy way would be to just buy Apex coins and get them that way. By Tyler South The Novice is the first book to the Summoner series by Taran Matharu. It has a fun thrilling story line, is simple to read, and is moderately paced. . Blacksmith apprentice, Fletcher, discovers that he has the ability to summon demons from another world, he travels to Vocans Adept Military Academy.The book’s start is a bit dark and violent but the rest of the book isn't as violent and is a very fun read. The ending was kind of expected based on how the book started.
The best features of this book are the rich descriptions, which provide the reader with in-depth immersion to the story and truly show the interaction with the different cast of characters. You get a very strong sense of place and feel like you're part of the story. I would recommend this book to people who are just starting out with reading fantasy books and want to see if they like the genre. By Seth Koskey Actor, singer, rapper, director, producer, comedian, and writer Donald Glover has starred in many TV shows like NBC comedies, Community and 30 Rock, FX’s drama comedy Atlanta, and many others, while acting in movies like Solo: A Star Wars Story. The reason we’re here today is to shine a light on his music, in which he goes under the pseudonym Childish Gambino, a name created by the Wu-Tang Clan name generator. Childish Gambino has released four full-length LPs along with two EPs throughout his nine year music career, which he announced was finished after the release of his last single: Feels Like Summer in 2018. Obviously a nine year career couldn’t have ended in 2018 with his first EP (EP: 2011) being released in 2011. Childish Gambino released a new album on March 15, 2020, only available on his website for 12 hours under the title 3.15.20. On March 22, 2020, the album was released on all music streaming services. It is unknown if Donald Glover’s music career is over, but no matter what, he will have left a consistent and illustrious discography. His crowning achievement in his career varies wildly from fan to fan, but since this is my opinion and my review, I will be looking at his 2013 album and in my opinion, his best work: Because the Internet. A quick backstory for the album shows it was recorded during the fourth and fifth season of the TV show Community, in which Donald Glover was present for half of season five, before leaving the show to work on other shows and music. Knowing the circumstances he was in, working on a full length album must have been stressful, and would probably affect the quality of the art, but not in this case.
By Linnaea Derner On September 25th, Joji dropped his third album “Nectar”. The album included 18 songs, some new and some singles that he had already released prior to the album. Most of the tracks follow Joji’s style: lo-fi, piano, and a light bass line.
Joji, aka Pink Guy, aka Filthy Frank, aka George Miller, got his start making music on YouTube. On one of George Miller’s YouTube channels, TVFilthyFrank, he released comedic videos and music that his alter ego “Pink Guy” produced. The music and their videos are not suitable for children and often got him in trouble with the general public. In 2017, due to health concerns, Pink Guy/ Filthy Frank stopped posting on YouTube to focus on a more serious music career. In February of the same year, Pink Guy (now professionally known as Joji) uploaded his music chart-topping song “Worldstar” on 88 Rising Youtube channel. 88 Rising is a “hybrid management, record label, video production, and marketing company" in the words of its founder Sean Miyashiro. 88 Rising’s goal is to help Asian singers get traction in the west. 88 Rising has singers like Joji, Niki, Rich Brian, and Jackson Wang--all people who are widely known in the east. 88 Rising also produced Joji's third album Nectar. Song number 3- “tick". While most of the songs “sounded” like Joji, there were two songs that caught my attention: “Reanimator” and “Your Man”. "Reanimator" has a kind of electronic instrumentation and no vocals until halfway through the song. This differs from Joji’s other songs because he usually doesn't let the instrumental intro go for that long. The other song: “Your Man” is about Joji being there for the person who he loves and who loves him, the song has a hopeful air that a person will come TO like that. My favorite song off of Nectar is “Tik Tok”, I like the melody and the bass beat. Compared to the other two of his albums, I would give Nectar an A. By Lauren Sweet My name is Lauren Sweet. I am seventeen and I’m a junior at West Valley High School in Fairbanks, Alaska. In the last seven days there has been a count of 115 COVID cases reported in Fairbanks. COVID became a serious concern for me when it started to cause a decrease in how much food is transported to us and when my whole life got put on hold. I’m more concerned about what it’s causing than the actual sickness itself.
COVID has caused me to lose a pretty decent amount of things. For example, I wasn’t able to fly and see my grandpa for the first time in years this summer due to the planes getting shut down and states closing. It prevented me from getting a job when I really needed one. I wasn’t able to get all the treatment I needed for my kidneys making the process prolonged. Instead of getting it cleared up within a few months, I’m still dealing with it and they can’t do much about it since they don’t want many people in the hospital unless it's an emergency. My dog; my best friend in the entire world got a bad disease that can kill quickly if not treated and almost wasn’t able to be helped. That terrified me the most because I don’t know how to cope without my childhood best friend. I lost that in person talking skill that was really hard for me to gain, as I was always such a quiet child to the point where teachers or family friends would ask if I was mute. Now I have to go back through that whole process again because COVID took school and soccer. Besides everything I’ve lost, I’ve gained quite a bit too. Due to not getting treated very well for my kidneys, I got to get a puppy. I would have never been able to get one if COVID hadn't happened. I gained the ability to focus on myself, especially my mental health, and I’ve been doing so much better than I’ve ever been. I learned to love nature more and the beauty of just getting off your phone and just taking off on a road trip. I can work out more with more free time and I’m now at a weight I’m really happy with. Since I can’t go out to movies or stores as much I’ve been able to save more money for emergencies. I’ve learned to be happy with who I have and what I have, since a lot of people are really struggling. I get to spend more time with my dad since I’m now home at the times he’s off work. I used to have really bad sleep terrors and sleep paralysis from stress and since COVID I haven’t been stressing as much and now I only get them about twice a month. Even if I’ve lost more than I gained, I still prefer the things I have gained. Under the sickness and sadness was a blessing in disguise to make me appreciate everything more and I’m so thankful for that. By Tenaya Arzac My name is Tenaya Arzac and I’m 17 years old. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska and I attend West Valley High School through remote learning. In Fairbanks there were 35 cases of Coronavirus yesterday. In total there have been 711 cases within Fairbanks.
Coronavirus became a serious thing to me about mid-March. I didn’t really know much about the virus. Besides some memes I hadn’t really seen serious information on it. Then one day while I was visiting Texas, I was in the middle of shooting a client’s pictures when we got a message that school and church had been cancelled until further notice due to Corona. That day I realized how serious it was. I also found out a few days later that my boyfriend Parker, who was living in Brazil on a mission, had to temporarily come home due to COVID. Every foreign missionary in the world also had to go back to their countries. Within two 2 weeks,Parker had come home. That was a historic first. The church had never sent a worldwide statement for missionaries to come home, and it was a big shock to everyone. Within 2 weeks my life had completely done a 180. Since then I’ve lost countless things. I’ve lost my job, I’ve lost money, I’ve lost once in a lifetime opportunities to travel. I’ve lost my senior year, I’ve lost my last homecoming, prom, sports, extra-curriculars, clubs, service hours, and possibly graduation. I’ve lost the opportunity to experience the last memories of this milestone in my life. I’ve lost the chance to make friends at a brand new school that I just moved to, a school which I’ll never go to again, so this was my only chance to make those friendships. And who knows, some of those could have been life changing friendships. I’ve lost one of the best experiences in the world, being connected to the people of Brazil through my boyfriend. I’ve lost any sense of normalcy. I’ve had to say another crushing mission goodbye. I’ve lost tears, time, and motivation. I’ve lost connection with everything that is unnecessary to my life, and everything that is all too materialistic and short term. Corona stripped my life, made it vulnerable and challenged. But that stripping was also a monumental experience for my personal growth. I’ve gained perception. In the discomfort I’ve been met with endless potential. I’ve gained truth about what’s important, what I can live without, and what the world does and doesn’t need from me. I’ve gained strength through the weathering. I’ve gained memories and I’ve gained life lessons. I’ve gained stronger relationships with those who matter. I gained the beautiful opportunity to see my best friend Parker, after being apart from each other for a year, when we thought we wouldn’t see each other for two years. I gained the ability to see how strong I am, after Parker and I had to say our second difficult and heavy mission goodbye. I gained the opportunity to be connected to not only the people of Brazil, but now also to the people of Pennsylvania, where he now serves. I’ve gained the ability to stop and realize what I really want in life, and with that I’ve gained an unbelievable amount of passion. I’ve gained the desire to act now in pursuing my dreams. I’ve gained the ability to focus on myself and what I need to do to get me to my potential. I’ve gained time for personal improvement in all categories of my life. I’ve grown a stronger relationship with myself and with God. I’ve gained the ability to lose normalcy. I’ve gained authenticity. I’ve gained the opportunity to live like no one else, so that I can live like no one else. By Violet Burnette The rate of child sexual assault in Alaska is almost six times the national average and the rate of rape in Alaska is 2.5 times the national average.
~~~~~ “Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” -Robert A. Heinlein ~~~~~ When I was four years old, my younger sister was born into this world. My mom was in the hospital, sweating, exhausted and smiling. I walked over. She told me to, “say ‘hi’ to your baby sister, sweetie.” I looked down, and in her arms, wrapped in a pink blanket, was my lil’ squid, Kirsten. At that moment, I imprinted on her. I felt the responsibility of an older sister, and the duty of a mother to protect her. I smiled, but at the young age of four, I knew what this world could do to a little girl who can’t defend herself. I looked up at my mom and told her I loved her, “I’m excited, mommy” I said. ~~~~~ I remember my dad screaming and yelling at my mom while I was sitting on the floor next to my plastic toy microwave and plastic food. Mom and I were pretending that I was a famous cook and I made meal after meal for her before my dad threw the door open and spit in my mom’s face. His breath reeked of alcohol; mom screamed for me to run into Gramma Annie’s room and lock the door. My dad slapped her and then looked down at me. I looked at my dad, and without thinking, ran to the kitchen counter, grabbed a fork and stabbed my dad in the leg. “Stay away from mommy! I hate you, get away from her!” I yelled. ~~~~~ Before that incident, I was abused by my dad. He was a serious alcoholic, and because of his drinking problem, my mom was never home. She started drinking with her friends, trying to forget all the pain that she was going through. I moved from home to home and stayed with family and friends of family who would look out for me. I remember some of them as nice people. Others were rough, loud, mean and grumpy. One of the families we stayed with during that time had sons. And one of the sons was a teenager who used to pull at my pink skirts. The boy wasn’t a bad person. I remember him as a funny, kind, generous and an all around good kid. Although, I’ve learned that even the nicest of people can be deceiving, or they might seem nice, but have dark intentions. ~~~~~ Approximately two thirds of rapes are committed by someone known to the victim. 73% of sexual assaults are perpetrated by a non-stranger, 38% of rapists are a friend or acquaintance, 28% are committed by intimate partners and 7% by a relative. ~~~~~ When I was in foster care, my friend/roommate and I would make up stories to preoccupy ourselves from boredom. She made up a story of a smiling man, who’d take you away from your loved ones. He’d lock you up and take everything that you cared about away from you. Smiling endlessly. He hid in the shadows and in crooked homes. Taking little girls and returning them to their families, changed forever. She said that the girls were never the same and that Mr. Smiley would poison them with darkness, hurt and pain. She said that he’s everywhere, and you never know when he’ll kidnap you and destroy your life. Ever since, I’ve had an imaginary demon, who slowly disappeared as the years flew by. Until December 5. ~~~~~ I’ve heard that your brain can block out childhood memories that can resurface later in life as you experience new things. When I was taken advantage of on Dec. 5th, 2015, flashbacks occurred and demons surfaced. That day I became 1 of 6 American females who have been a victim of an attempted/completed rape in her lifetime. (14.8% completed rape; 2.8 attempted rape). It was scary, because I always thought that I was strong enough to protect myself and others. But I just froze and couldn’t move and flashbacks kept pouring into my mind. I had the urge to hurt him as others have hurt me. I wanted him to suffer and bleed. But I couldn’t move. It was as if all my childhood years were twisting together to form a contorted smiling man hovering above me, pushing me down. ~~~~~ I think that being a woman is very difficult. So many wonderful, strong, and loving women have suffered similar experiences and have had it demolish their lives. Out of every 100 rapes only 7 lead to arrests. Is it any wonder that there is an increased risk in depression, post traumatic stress, abuse of drugs and alcohol, and contemplated suicide for these women? In one of my classes, students had a huge debate about rape and rapists. The boys said that quite a few girls made up their stories for attention (you have no idea how many times I’ve heard that one). The girls threw up their defense mechanisms and spoke their truths, put up a good argument and slightly changed the boys’ perspective on the topic. The girls knew other people who were raped as well and said that they had troubles and difficulties. Rape is taking a life and replacing it with something darker. So, for all of you reading this, please consider helping or taking it seriously and don’t just assume that it was for attention. ~~~~~ ……………………...Every 107 seconds, another American is sexually assaulted……………………………. ……..Almost 75% if Alaskans have experienced or know someone who has experienced domestic violence or sexual assault………. By Kara Wollman Alaska has some crazy weather and we all know when winter hits we get slick roads and cold temperatures. Fairbanks roads are just a sheet of ice, especially near the intersections because the car's exhaust and tires create heat on the road causing the ice to melt then freeze again during the night.
There are a couple things you can do to get ready for handling the icy roads while driving. One way to really prepare your car for this type of roads is to get winter tires put on. With the right tires, you won’t slide around as much and you can stop quicker. You should also always reduce your speed and go easy on the brakes. If you do start to feel your car fishtailing or sliding, you need to turn your wheels the same direction as the way the rear of the car is sliding. There are also things that you can do to your car and for yourself to plan for the cold, and to get ready for the icy roads. Some of the most important tips to know about your car for the cool winter days from www.Today.com:
