By Mage Maleinge Cheerleading tryouts were held on Monday, December 3, in the West Valley Gymnasium. Many girls participated in the selection.
The plan for the tryout was to spend several days learning. First, in the week before tryouts the participants had to go to practices from 4:30 to 6:30, in order to learn a dance with a professional choreographer. They also had to learn to cheer and perform the cheers perfectly, as well as perform jumps of different kinds. The ambiance at tryouts was very good and girls could be seen helping each other in order to better realize their sequences. It was three very intense days of preparation before the tryout. Twenty-three participants were present on the day. In groups of two they presented their sequence to a jury.. Most of the future cheerleaders were dressed with the colors of the school and even wore makeup for the occasion. Stress and excitement reigned in the hallway where everyone was waiting for their turn. After an hour and a half of tryout and 15 minutes of deliberation the list of participants selected to form the team was out. Most of the girls who participated had already been cheerleading at the front and some had already been on the cheerleading team for the football team earlier in the season. Being a cheerleader is a job that takes time and energy, the qualities needed are numerous, "You need to be really loud, be on beat, and have a lot of spirit and confidence" said senior, Madison Kreider.
